Every industry has it’s own requirements when it comes to audio visual systems and technology.  Working with churches or other houses of worship requires a certain knowledge, experience, and understanding. The technology used in a church sanctuary needs to work for all facets of a church service; that includes the needs of the choir, instrumentalists, and for those speaking.  Speech intelligibility is a big issue in church buildings.  Some churches have found themselves in situations where the equipment used with the instruments and music; do not work well to convey the message of a speaker.  This is a big deal, because as we all know, it does not matter how powerful or inspired the message if no one person can hear or understand it.

This waterfront property in Boston is the new flagship for Legal Sea Foods. The three level, 700 seat establishment is the largest Legal Sea Foods and the largest restaurant in Boston. As each level has a different theme, each one required different audio visual solutions.

CEI provided engineering, design, and installation of the AV system that included a multi zoned background music system, a unique four sided TV display for the second floor Bar, weather resistant audio solutions for the two outdoor areas as well as the retractable roof third floor, multiple flat screen TVs for the third floor, the capability to add live musicians into the background music system, and easy control of the system from each floor.

CEI was approached by Peachtree Christian Church to explore options to add a video projection system to their sanctuary. After discussing their frustrations on their 2 year old sound system, our scope was changed to resolve the speech intelligibility issues in the main sanctuary. CEI modeled the room using the EASE program and it was determined that rather than selling them new speakers, we could reconfigure their existing speakers. We split their existing horizontally mounted 16’ Renkus Heinz speaker column in half and relocated the two halves vertically in the front of the sanctuary on the first columns left and right of the altar. Also added were two additional columns for the choir located in the balcony, which is also where the sound board is located.

Since this is an historical building in Atlanta, we had our faux painter meticulously texture and paint the speakers to identically match the stone columns on the lower level and the millwork for the balcony speakers. The result was that the congregation did not even notice the speakers when entering the sanctuary after the work was completed. Monitors for the altar, and chairs left and right of the altar were also added and painted to match the stone. Each of these had separate volume controls as well.

Last, the church originally had pew back speakers that had been disconnected. CEI tested and reconnected the first 3 rows of pews to provide coverage where the modeling indicated a lack of coverage. An additional Bi-Amp Nexus Audio processor and choir stick mics were added to the system as well as portable monitors when a stage is used for special services. The result was that every seat in the Sanctuary became a great seat with excellent speech intelligibility.

CEI earned this new construction Chapel project located in Cleveland TN which required a complete audio system for the Sanctuary, narthex, terrace level reception hall, bride and groom’s rooms. For the main Sanctuary, Renkus-Heinz Iconyx ICL-FR loudspeaker arrays were used to cover the Main Sanctuary: two columns covered the north and south transepts, two arrays covered the main Sanctuary, and two Renkus-Heinz PN82/9r Power loudspeakers covered the balcony. All were painted to match the millwork.

Additionally, two Renkus-Heinz PN212-SUBR powered portable subwoofer speakers, fixed choir fold back speakers, portable floor monitors, OAP NF-331HP stairstep front fill loudspeakers in the platform riser and additional loudspeakers in the narthex, corridors, bride’s and groom’s room. A Roland M-300 Live V digital mixing console and stage boxes, Bi-Amp Nexia DSP, other audio sources and wired and wireless microphones, source rack and Telex wireless intercom system rounded out the major equipment. What a beautiful sanctuary for a wedding and other special events!

The terrace level reception hall was outfitted with a separate system which includes two ceiling mounted KSI 80891-CSD loudspeakers for stereo source playback flanking the sides of the motorized projection screen and Tannoy CMS601BM ceiling loudspeakers for vocal reinforcement. A Soundcraft analog mixer, wireless microphones and source equipment is located in an in-wall rack.
